On the 11th of July, the Commissioner joined the Employer’s Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA) for their Insight Hour webinar on “The Domestic Abuse Act 2021: What employers need to know”. The webinar explored the responsibilities employers have to safeguard their employees who may be experiencing domestic abuse, and how they can play a vital role in supporting victims/survivors.
The Commissioner spoke with EIDA’s CEO Susan Bright, and also took questions from the audience about how employers can navigate situations where the victim and perpetrator are employed by the same organisation and the support landscape for male victims.
The Commissioner highlighted that employers do not need to be experts on domestic abuse to be able to support victims/survivors. Rather, they can provide reassurance and crucial help by signposting to appropriate support services.
“Employers are a crucial part of the system response to domestic abuse. Employers are often the first port of call as colleagues and line managers. Understanding domestic abuse is a core part of ensuring employee wellbeing.”
